Hey HonorBound,
I wanted to bring attention to an important piece of legislation that could directly affect many of us: H.R. 966, the Veterans Cannabis Use for Safe Healing Act.
What the bill does:
- It prohibits the VA Secretary from denying any VA benefit (disability compensation, healthcare, etc.) solely because a veteran participates in a state-approved medical marijuana program.
- Requires VA providers to discuss marijuana use with veterans who are in these programs, adjust treatment plans accordingly, and properly document it in our medical records.
- Allows VA doctors to give recommendations/opinions about medical marijuana in states where it's legally available.
Sponsor: Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL-17)
Introduced: February 4, 2025
Current Status: Referred to the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee → Subcommittee on Health (as of March 2025). It’s still early in the process.

This bill matters because a lot of veterans use state-legal medical cannabis for chronic pain, PTSD, sleep issues, and other service-connected conditions — but many still worry it could jeopardize their benefits. H.R. 966 aims to remove that fear and bring VA policy in line with what’s already legal in most states.
Current VA Policy Note: Right now, the VA officially says they won’t deny benefits just for marijuana use, but there’s still gray area, especially with documentation and provider recommendations. This bill would codify stronger protections.
What are your thoughts, brothers and sisters?
- Have you had issues or concerns discussing cannabis with your VA provider?
- Should we write to our representatives to support this?
- Anyone have experience with medical marijuana helping where other treatments fell short?
Let’s keep this discussion respectful and on-topic. Looking forward to hearing real experiences from the community.
