What is TDIU?
TDIU allows Veterans who cannot maintain substantially gainful employment due to their service-connected conditions to receive compensation at the 100% rate — even if their combined schedular rating is below 100%.
There are two paths: schedular TDIU (§4.16(a)) for Veterans who meet specific rating thresholds, and extra-schedular TDIU (§4.16(b)) for Veterans below those thresholds whose particular situation still prevents employment.
